:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Eric B. -- Compelling! : As an older reader, I wasn't sure how I would take to this author's debut offering, seemingly written for a demographic I'm well outside of. I thoroughly enjoyed the read. Mr. Calvillo is gifted, very capably creating fluid, organic dialogue that paints a clear and gripping picture of the youthful dance between grim angst, and earnest optimism. Although the author has a distinct voice, for me the themes were reminiscent of S.E. Hinton: divided communities, empathy, preserving childhood innocence, self-sacrifice and honor, and individual identity. Mr. Calvillo has insight you would think is well beyond his years, until it dawns on you that he, like all of us, navigated the harrowing waters of high school, when we learned just how insecure we were, how cruel human beings can be, how human our parents actually are, how bittersweet reality can be, and how to cope with it all. It reminds us that some seem to walk through the raindrops, while others seem to be dealt a lousy hand, and only the most hopeful, authentic, and resilient find a way out of the darkness. The characters are connected in an authentic and poignant way (my favorite is Brad). In addition to the distinct viewpoints, I also appreciated how the story shifted among the characters.
